Course Description:
19th Century Britain
The course aims at looking into the main intellectual, social, and political changes that shaped 19th Century Britain. Students will be provided with basic knowedge about the period through the study of secondary and primary sources. An emphasis will be put on enhancing students ability to get autonomy in critical reading, analysis, synthesis, and reporting (oral discussion, paraphrazing, and summarizing) of relevant historical material.
Semester 1: Domestic Issues in 19th Century Britain
- Aspects and Achievements of the Industrial Revolution (agricultural revolution, enclosure movement, innovations, domestic vs factory systems of production, economic and social thought, transportation,...)
- Social Impact and Protest
- Social and Political Reforms
- The Rise of Trade Unions
